Can you have dual monitor display with one VGA cable and one DVI cable on Windows XP?

I have two monitors. One is connected with a DVI cable, and I can connect another one with VGA and link them onto two ports on one computer. Is it possible to have dual monitor display with this setup? What changes would I have to make? Can you have dual monitor display with one VGA cable and one DVI cable on Windows XP?
With no further information (graphics card, connectors on it, drivers and video control software), I would guess nothing special.
Click on any empty area of desktop with right mouse button.
Go to display properties or any ATI or nVidia software shown on menu
Proceed to activate second monitor.
You have choice of cloned display (same image) or extended desktop (wider on two screens). On the second choice, you can arrange side-by-side, under-and-over, or staggered by dragging the monitor symbols. That will make the mouse pointer travel from screen to screen properly
