EDIT:
The H61 motherboard suggested by PTRP above is not good. H61 is the oldest chipset for Intel Sandy Bridge processors. You want the Z68 chipset, newest and best.
Also I recommend 8GB RAM, not just 4GB.
I forgot about the DVD Drive, but that's only $20 or less (I just bought one for $16)

Never put cheap and gaming in the same sentence...
Also, Alienware are overpriced. Build your own and save a bundle plus end up with better specs.
Without a budget, it's hard to guide you one way or the other.
Best setup for gaming would be:
Intel Core i5-2500K ($229)
An Intel Core i3-2100 series would be minimal, if your budget is very low. ($125)
For either one, get a Z68 chipset, socket LGA1155 motherboard ($107 on newegg):

Also get a good after market heat sink and fan, like this Sunbeam Twister ($35):

Get 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM, G.Skill Ripjaws X Series ($47)
At least a GeForce GTX 460 Fermi or better graphics card ($130 or more)
A 600 watts or bigger power supply, brand name (Enermax, Cooler Master, Antech, OCZ, Corsair), a modular one would be best. ($60 to over $100)
A PC Case (ATX tower) with bottom mounted power supply and plenty of space for good air flow, 2 or 3 fans 120mm to 140mm. ($50 to over $150)
500Gb or 1TB Seagate Barracuda SATA III (6.0Gb/s), 7,200 rpm, 32 or 64MB Cache
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit OEM ($100)
Total around $800 to $950. Final total price would depend on the processor you choose and other minor price variables.
I won't go into monitors, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc. Except to say you will need a full HD 1080p (1920 x 1080) 27" monitor or a 42" HD TV.What is a good gaming desktop that isn't too expensive?
Just gut your old desktop with new parts, hardware can be replaced. What is a good gaming desktop that isn't too expensive?
well friend, building your own is the best way to get a decent gaming PC that can let you play all games on mid settings and some on high settings on 1080p. The price is around $700-$800 =P
here is an example:
Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120 - $120

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM - $100
TOTAL : $767 ($742 after rebate), this is the lowest build that I would like to recommend to you, this build is very decent, it can let you play games on mid-high settings including BF3 (mid settings) =P
But if you could get an HD6870 ($145 after rebate) then it would be better, can let you play games on high-max settings. BUT you also have to change to 600w +80 Branded PSU.
NOTE : newegg.com prices
IF you are not going to build one then, Falcon computers or digital storm are good prebuilt ones
